Matter is perpetually variable and in continuous modulation. The act of splitting wood is guided by the variable undulations and torsions of the fibres. When the wood is split this way, the material is given agency, connecting the act of making with the materiality, rather than imposing form onto the matter.
The axe’s splitting force uses gravity. The force and the action is hard to control. The axe lands on the wood, and wood reacts, splitting along the path of least resistance. This path is already a part of the wood, part of its history and its growth, created when the wood was a tree
